Old notes worth ` 1.3 cr seized at border

3 arrested; notes were being transported from Margao

CANACONA
Police have arrested three women from Karnataka on charges of transporting demonetised currency notes worth Rs 1.3 crore from Margao bus stand to Uttar Kannada at the Goa-Karwar border.
According to reports, the three accused women were allegedly transporting demonetised notes worth Rs 1.3 crore by a bus from Goa to Uttar Kannada.
Sources informed that the accused women reportedly told the police that the bag containing the demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 was given to them by an unidentified person at Margao bus stand and it was to be delivered to one woman, the wife of a government doctor working in a hospital in Karnataka.
Chittakula Police arrested the three accused, Jayashree Hanumanth Gowli, Bhavani and Meenakshi, all from Mundgod town in Uttar Kananda, at the Goa-Karwar border. Police is investigating the case further.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the demonetisation on November 8 last year declaring that use of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series would be invalid.
